Well for our dates looking online direct with the airline at VA, the same flights are either 480 via skyscanner or 660 direct with the airline.

VA charges extra for checked luggage and choosing seats but meals are included.

However there's a bigger gap now with Norwegian only 390 with an additional 25 for a meal each way (in which case we'd have a very large breakfast and take snacks with us).

Separate car hire is 550, looking at a flydrive with VA it's an extra 180 for the same car.

So my cheapest option comparing flights with 2 suitcases, car hire and no in flight meals looks like Norwegian by quite a margin.

I've gone with Norwegian this year. The only bad thing I've ever heard about them is occasional flight delays, but consumer protections for flight delays are really good so I'm not fussed considering it's direct.

Like a few people, I've had my flight time slightly changed since booking. It's really a non-issue. Further, they allow you to change flights or cancel for a full refund if (for some reason) the change is too much for you, but they only seem to change by a couple hours at most, and they told me months and months in advance.

I would expect airline fares across the board to go up due to the higher price of crude with low cost airlines like Norwegian feeling it more.

Personally I would go with Norwegian if they were all about the same price. We've had great experiences with them both time we flew with them.

Personally, I wouldn’t fly Norweigen, they seem to be following the same financial routecas FlyGlobespan.
But just ensure you have end user supplier failure insurance and you should be ok

As you are hiring a car' as others have said try (you may have done so already) a dummy booking for a Fly Drive package on BA Website. We have done this many times and on many occasions it is cheaper than the flight only deals. As others have said you only need to pay a deposit as well and you have the full Protection as you are buying a package.

In our experience it is always far less expensive than Virgin.

FlyGlobrspan went under because thier credit card processor screwed up and so they had a cash supply shortage. Norwegian will likely go bust due to expanding too quickly, offering cheap seats and not even covering the costs of the flights let alone make any money, and wilth fuel going up it won't make it easier for Norwegian.. On the plus side if Norwegian gets into too much financial difficulties they may take up IAGs offer to buy them..

I would try Norwegian

Virgin - more unruly children with parents that don’t control them I avoid econmybif I possibly can with Virgin for Las or MCO other routes slightly better LAX fine

BA - snootier cabin staff but we choose them and pick a route with American also got minor status so I don’t pay to book and have a slightly better chance at upgrade.
