Beauty Box - Worth it?

I'm thinking of subscribing to a beauty box but not sure whether it actually is worth it.
A few of my friends swear by them and some are saying it's a waste of money.

I've had the following recommended as good options:
Birchbox
Lookfantastic

Has anyone used them and if so what sort of products are you getting, and is it worth the cost?

dd has a look fantastic subscription and loves it she has it for a couple for years now and has only had a few duplicate items in that time. The range of items is pretty good and each box has a theme. Everyone get the same items but some item might have multiple colour options of which you get one. Boxes are charged on/around the 1st and usually arrive about the 4/5th on standard delivery -you can pay extra for faster delivery. The xmas advent calendars have been really good too but they are expensive.
You get a mini sized elle magazine each month too.

Birchbox is dire we had nothing but problems delivery is really really slow that's if it turns up at all. We've had orders cancelled due to not enough stock or the free gift not being available and the couple we actually got were pretty poor content wise.

She has recently tried glossy box for the first time as she had a discount code and that was pretty good - the items you receive are a lot more random as you get 5/6 items from a wider selection rather than everyone getting the same ones. Postage was quick it came in 2 days but we ordered late in the month further boxes are apparently posted out between the 5th &12th of the month so there might be a wait to get it each month we'll find out this month.

I had glossy box for about 2 years, I found a few good products from them, but some of the products were crazy! I think you have to have an open mind about the kind of things you use, where I’m quite basic with my skin care (like wash & moisurise, non of this peel and mask stuff really) it would suit someone who’s a bit more adventurous with it. The boxes for glossy box are quite nice though, I still use mine for storage of various stuff around my rooom!

I used Birchbox for around 2 years- never had any delivery issues but I do see people complaining on their facebook page. You often get to choose a product every month, like which shade of lipstick or eyeshadow. You can personalise your profile to say for instance you don't want tanning products. The boxes are themed and really pretty, I use some of the nicest ones as make up storage.

The content was usually nice, from unknown brands that I now love to ones like Benefit or Eyeko. It normally felt worth the cost and I love having lots of things to try. I mainly stopped because I have soooooo much and you do end up getting repeats when you're doing it for a long time. You used to get Birchbox points too to spend in their shop although I'm not sure if that still exists.

I would go for it, it's a nice way to treat yourself every month without breaking the bank.

I agree I have had Birchbox for 2.5 years. Never had a delivery issue and the only problem in that time was that two months ago I got a shampoo for blonde hair when profile shows I am a brunette but they sorted this for me without issue (although slow to deal with their emails). I enjoy getting the box and use most things. Whether it is value for money or not is debatable. As with all these boxes if you need it to be value for money then they may not be suitable as you will get duplicate items or things you won't use.

Have a look at the QVC Tili box. You can buy it without having to subscribe. I've bought a couple in the past and been happy with them

Thanks for all the responses I’m already thinking of plan B which is gift bags for products I wont use so not too bothered by getting something a little different.
My main concern is paying out and getting ‘market stall’ products IYKWIM 😀

Only done Birchbox but it's never market stall or pound land type stuff! Some really nice usually expensive brands. They often have Benefit and just looking quickly through my make up stash I have Eyeko, Laura Mercier, Wet Brush (best hairbrush ever), Lord & Berry, Beauty Blender, Spectrum brushes, Jelly Pong Pong, Marcelle, Model Co, The Balm, Nuxe, This Works etc etc all from Birchbox. Might not have initially heard of all the brands they use but they are all nice and discovery is half the fun!

You do occasionally get some duds like hand sanitizer or the bloomin Percy & Reed hair oil which I hated and they kept sending, but they can't all be winners lol. I do give away and swap items with my sister when I get colours that don't suit or things I'm not keen on

I recently got Birchbox... Worst idea.

Boxes were all late, communication to sort was appalling. Contents were basically what you could get free from the makeup counters if you asked nicely. Pretty dire to be fair.
