Thinking back my grandmother always had a hat on when she left the house. It didn't come off until she got home again. She was born early 1900's though.

I genuinely don’t take any notice of what other people do or don’t do ..
If it’s not causing me any bother why should I care!
As many people have posted people do things for many different reasons!

There was an older couple in Ginny and Jane E’s at Anna Maria this year and the lady was on her phone for the entire breakfast. I couldn’t believe it, looked so rude, the couple barely spoke to each other 😳

Exactly, my oldest is autistic and often watches things on her phone to help her calm down in overwhelming situations. I work from home and often have to answer work emails or messages from my younger daughter when the older one and I are out. She is homeschooled and we spend the vast majority of our time together. We don't need to "catch up" while waiting for our food.

No phones at the table at home, other than that if on holiday and our kids are on their phone it’s probably because they have no data and want free WiFi lol, bald hubby takes his hat off, other than that I don’t really care what others are doing

Hats is a difficult one - if I’ve had a hat on all day I’m going to have hat hair and I won’t want to take my hat off so yes I would want to leave my hat on in a restaurant. I remember us going to 50s prime time and the waitress asked us to take hats off and I didn’t like it - cos I’m sure then they take a photo “hey I don’t want a photo to remind me my hair looked awful under my hat! ”
Phones - tbh I think ours have gone through that now. DS23 doesn’t come anyway but if we are at a restaurant here he won’t go on his phone unless no1 is chatting. But dd21 happily doesn’t touch her phone and will chat. Being honest it’s more DH who will scroll through his phone - the older generation 🙄.
It doesn’t bother me if other people do it’s not affecting me.

It obviously doesn’t effect or bother me what other people do as long as it’s not having a negative impact on our family meal (music, games noise etc)
I was always brought up that wearing a hat whilst eating is bad manners and I love our family interactions when we go for a meal out, chatting, laughing, planning etc I would be rather upset if one of my children preferred to be glued to their phone.
We stayed with our friends for 9 nights last year, their 3 children and my best friends husband kept their hats on and their faces glued to their phones. I was a bit offended by this as it was rather rude when we was all supposed to be socialising. Maybe my family are too boring so a phone is better company 😂😂
We’ve had meals where the 6 of us laugh chat and plan, we’ve had meals where there’s be war, we’ve had meals where me & dh could feel the atmosphere bubbling so have rushed them out everybody & family is different mine certainly isn’t perfect and I think this is why I don’t feel the need judge others and what’s correct manners or not

I certainly don’t feel the need to judge others, it doesn’t bother me what other people do or don’t do but in this instance we was all having a meal together, our first night of meeting up. 4 out of the family of 5 had hats on and heads down looking at their phones. No interaction at all, the rest of us could just see the tops of their baseball caps. Didn’t even look up when the server placed the food down. So in my eyes that was bad manners as it effected my meal because they were part of my party/table. What others do on other tables in not my concern.
My original post was to ask if others did or did not wear hats/use phones. Not in a judgmental way.
I am of an age that manners were forced down your neck, we would get a slap on the head if we make a noise whilst eating etc
At school you would get the ruler on the back of your hand for messing around during lunch.
