Now it’s time to put the kettle on, refresh the snacks and open more booze as the hosts introduce the voting and we have a recap of the acts. It’s followed by an interval act that drops the pretentious artiness of those in the semi-finals, going instead for technical wizardry and a celebratory feel. It starts on film with a young couple joining others to run for a tram which turns out to be filled with an orchestra. Is this a regular occurrence during rush hour in Rotterdam? There’s clever use of augmented reality, local landmark the Erasmus bridge features heavily and it all ends with a dance party in the hall.

Then we get Nikkie’s guide to Eurovision, and a look backstage at all the work which has gone into producing this year’s show. And after another recap, we go up to the rooftop for a brief concert of past winners. The ever-present Mans Zelmerlow reprises ‘Heroes’, then previous Dutch winners give their classic ‘Ding-a-Dong’ which still makes no sense in English. Staying with the Netherlands, Lenny Kuhr (who despite the name is female) reminds us of the Jacques Brel-esque ‘De Troubadour’ which suits her voice even better these days. And then we have a reminder of Helena’s Greek winner ‘My Number One’ complete with dancers lying down to form a figure 1. Must be chilly on that rooftop.

Duncan Laurence, who won for the Netherlands last year, is unable to be present due to testing positive earlier in the week, so we have a filmed version of his winning song and another song. I still don’t see the appeal, I’m afraid.

Back to the green room for some chat before we do the end-of-voting countdown. The Eurovision dancers are put to good use again, forming the figures as the audience counts us down and the voting lines are closed.

What follows is perhaps best glossed over, from a UK perspective at least. There are a few bizarre outfits – Poland’s zebra dress complete with matching gloves, Sweden’s last-minute hand preventing a wardrobe malfunction. The jury votes are pretty consistent, favouring Switzerland, France, Italy, Malta and Iceland. Any of those could be winners for us, though we’re favouring France at this point. None of the juries give the UK any points at all, and by the end of the jury voting we are the only country still to score any points.

So our hope lies with the public, then. Oh dear. The method for announcing the votes means starting with the country in last place. The revelation that the entire voting public has given the UK zero points is met with shocked gasps in the hall, followed by a rousing cheer for James and much support from his fellow contestants. He takes it in very British stoical spirit. But there were far worse songs on that stage tonight than ours. Maybe he should have dressed in rhinestones. No, scratch that. The long leather jacket will doubtless be on special offer at Jacamo soon.

Elsewhere in the public vote, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands also get zero. Some triple-figure numbers cause Lithuania, Finland, Ukraine and Iceland to leapfrog briefly to the top. Iceland’s ‘One hundred and eighty points’ is even announced in classic darts style, which gives us a giggle. But the final result pushes Italy to a win.

Despite the disappointment for the UK, it’s been a fun night with an unusually strong lineup, and the sense of excitement at being able to get together again is obvious. Ah well, time to clear away the debris and put in an order for pizza and Peroni next year. Arrivederci, folks.

I thought the interval act was very good and the augmented reality was very impressive (I am easily impressed). It helped that it was an electro dance number.

The best bit was Olaf Yohansson of Iceland giving 12 points to the song "Jaja Ding Dong".
