Driving in Europe
Hi all, we are window shopping villa holidays in Europe at the moment and we’d like something quite quiet and so we will need to hire a car. We’re not the most confident drivers (we were fine driving in Orlando though).
For any experienced European drivers - are there any countries which are easier to navigate then others? We do like the idea of Tuscany but stories about driving in Italy put me off. We don’t plan on driving into any major cities, it will be from the airport to a villa and then popping to local shops/markets. |

I live in France. The cities are always worse than the countryside. I have driven in Italy but never in the cities (except Genoa) and to be honest it was fine. But I am used to driving in the other side 🤣

In 2018 we did a diy fly drive in and out of Bologna. We stayed in Florence, Siena, Lucca and the Cinque Terre. We avoided the big cities (apart from getting to Bologna airport) and to be honest the thought of driving was much worse that the reality. A satnav is essential. It was a fantastic trip.

We drove in Italy a few years ago in Umbria and a bit of Tuscany and we found the roads fine
The country roads were a lot quieter than the uk and the only issues with the cities were parking We also did a road trip from Uk through France, Belgium and the Netherlands and the roads were no worse than driving in the Uk Menorca is lovely to drive round, lots of little coves to stop at too and speeds were low Cyprus is stressful especially through their towns and cities, they pull out in front of you

Done a lot of driving in France including through the centre of Paris (nightmare) and have driven through lots of Spain and one journey from Gib and up through France to the U.K. because of the ash cloud which was ok .
Also lots of driving to Germany from U.K. and back and that’s a nice drive as the autobahn is fantastic . I find Spanish and French drivers quite scary compared to German! Edited at 08:43 PM. |

Driving in Europe is no harder than in the UK. You just need to do a little research on the laws and sign posts. For example not all french villages have speed limit signs, but there is a standard limit when in a build up area you need to stick to.
If your confidence isn't high and you want to be able to focus on the road as much as possible, hire an automatic if you have driven one before. Its one less thing to think about. Also having a passenger / sat nav to help direct and spot the signs / exits you need is useful. Big cities will be slow traffic so that's a good thing, you then just need to be aware of side roads where people may force their way out of. On Street parking can be a pain where you are left very little room to get out of. But that is in your control and you can take your time to find the right spot (or even car park). All in all its not difficult and you very quickly get used to being on the other side of the car. |
