New garage door costs

Has anyone has their garage door replaced recently? I’ve had 2 quotes ranging from £550 to £700. The other 4 people I’ve rung aren’t working / isolating etc.

It’s nothing fancy, just a standard white up and over door for a garage in a block so I’m not fussed what it looks like.

Does anyone know is this is about right? We are in West Sussex if that helps.

Thank you x

Those prices are in the range I would expect. I assume it’s a door and metal frame as well not a door and wooden frame as that’s a waste of money.

I favour Hormann as a make. Made in Germany so enough said. Excellent product and loads of fitters use them

I would also go with Hormann. In fact I wouldn't install anything else.
I put one in in 2018 - 3m wide, non-standard colour to match our front door, and faster motor. It was £1500 all in and worth every penny.
There were others half the price - on paper they looked the same. When we went to see them, there was no comparison in quality.
OP, I would make sure you go and actually see the door type that is being installed before deciding. See what you are actually buying.

I had 2 electric ones fitted, Birkdale doors with Sommer German motors etc, £1300 each including vat so I’d certainly expect 700 to be top end for manual.

We had ours done for £650. Was a bog standard Garadoor with metal frame and a pvc front to the top of the garage (replacing rotting wood) all installed by a local firm. They gave us £50 off for the scrap value of the old door and frame.

If we were doing it again we'd go for the same firm, but a door with vertical lines, not horizontal ( all the muck collects in the grooves).

This looks similar to the one they are fitting.

We don’t use the garage, it’s almost empty. It the door broke ages ago and it looks a mess so it’s time to sort it out. It can’t be fixed as the whole mechanism has snapped, but it’s 60 years old.

Thank you

It’s a cardale door that’s been quoted for the £550 job, the other quote doesn’t say what it is.

Cardale is fine. I would expect any written quote to include full details of the brand to be supplied though.

One was written (cheapest one) the other was given to me by the man who measured up.

I wouldn’t agree to any work that wasn’t agreed in writing, don’t worry 🤣

Well done. The thing is times change as so do products. Back when I started on the tools in 1970 Garador was the market leader. Actually they were excellent.

Then over time as with all things the metal was thinner to save costs but better mechanisms were developed and they lagged behind. Still good mind.

Bottom line is 4 things. Price, quality, warranty and looks. We are all different but as long as you tick all or some of the boxes that's fine.
