Picking and dropping car off in different state

We are planning on flying to New York in November and driving to Florida , making multi stops overnight along the way. I looked at car hire prices for pick up in Newark where we arrive and dropping off in Orlando where we depart and they are horrendous. I thought they would be a bit more expensive due to different pick up and drop off points but looking at over �2000 for 17 nights 😱😱😱

What dates and vehicle are you looking for? Based on 17 days from 1st Nov the compact car with Budget starts at �653 (+circa �330 in one way rental fee's). Intermediate SUV is �795 + one way rental fee. (these prices are through my offline system so won't appear on the website)
