We love The Ivy Asia. Tried Giggly squid last week, nice for lunch.
Giovanni's is a nice family run Italian.

This is such a great thread. We always flounder and either end up being disappointed or go to the Ivy or Mowgli. Both of which are nice but I do prefer an independent.
Funnily enough, DS discovered Maison De Boeuf a couple of weeks ago on his way back from a night out. Didn’t go in but sent a pic because the signage reminded him of the Ratatouille queue!
He likes The Ivy Asia but we’ve not been with him. It’s harder to get a last minute table there!

Giovannis is lovely, unpretentious and excellent food.

If you are prepared for an adventure, try Wales’ only ramen joint, Matsudai Ramen. Utterly amazing and has been championed by food writer Jay Rayner.

We tend to find restaurants in Cardiff to be either over-expensive (for us) or the usual chain type of places.

However, our favourite restaurant for a nice meal out with a lovely view and reasonable prices is Signor Valentino’s in Cardiff Bay, really delicious Italian food and we’ve had excellent, friendly service there even though it’s often very busy. Would definitely need booking though.

I’ve also heard good things about Yakitori 1 in Cardiff Bay if you like Japanese food. Although it’s another that needs booking as we’ve tried twice and it’s been fully booked

Thanks so much, that's given me lots to research. I do know Cardiff quite well but tend to stick to the bay for food.

I live in Sully and can recommend the sully inn, captains wife and the newly opened 1988 Indian which are all in Sully.

You also goodsheds in Barry which has some nice eateries- if there's anything on you could also try the small space- Jasper puts on really good shows there.

I eat out in Cardiff regularly- asador 44 is nice ( same people as Bar 44 in Penarth) le monde (same people as custom house) or Madeira. We ate out at Gaucho last week- eye wateringly expensive- 236 for 2 people, and although the food was good it wasn't that good. Six by Nico is lovely and is good value for money. Maison de bouef in Castle arcade can highly recommend.

Purple poppadom on Cowbridge road- haven't eaten here for a while but was always nice.

Outskirts of cardiff- Porro in Llandaff is a lovely Italian, and you also have the heathcock in llandaff too, that is stunning food.

Loads of choice! Enjoy!
Have you ever been to Home by James Sommerin in Penarth? I have just booked my birthday lunch there. £68 for 4 courses. Not bad for a 1 Michelin star restaurant. Hopefully the courses will be big enough that I won't have to buy fish and chips on the way home...!

We have seen him on Great British Menu and saw the restaurant featured on Hairy Bikers Go Local. It looks really nice.

If you don't mind a short drive out of Cardiff try the Maenllwyd Inn Rudry, lovely setting and great food. There is also a Miller and Carter in Thornhill on the outskirts of Cardiff which is nicer than the city centre offering.
