I take a copy, as others said, just in case passport goes missing. Much easier to get replaced if you can take all the details to the embassy or consulate office.

As for is a photocopy good for ID? Who knows its down to the actual place asking for ID as they can all make their own rules about what is acceptable. The only stipulation in law is that an actual passport is always valid ID, in the US some places don't accept non american driving licences as ID (although since we moved to photo card this is very rare)

Is a photocopy of a passport good enough for ID - my view is no - after all a photocopy of 20 dollars isn't good enough to buy you a beer, and in both cases they do show that at some point you had one in your possession (stretching the example a little I know, but you get the point)

We took copies in case our originals were lost/stolen. I also laminated several small cards with emergency numbers on just in case the authorities needed to contact our family back in the UK in an emergency.

I know what you mean by the statement, but on reading it quickly it sounds like a strange insult (as in stick it where the sun doesn't shine)

Probably more to do with my mind though...

I would be very surprised if anywhere in Florida would accept a photocopy / picture of a passport alone as ID. One word comes to mind - Photoshop.

The fines for serving alcohol to minors in Florida (& the USA in general) are severe. The server gets a large fine and / or some prison time, the licensee gets hit too.

Disney policy is UK driving licence (photocard) + a copy / smartphone picture of the passport to confirm the DOB details. Universal policy is "ID up to 30" and they accept just a UK photocard driving licence.

Have never had problems using just my driving licence anywhere to be honest - I do look well over 21 though!

Oh, they definitely do accept a passport copy some places. I got caught out buying a drink for OH (I was 22 at the time, and because I don't drink, forgot that ID'ing for alcohol was a thing) and all I had was a passport copy - this was in OKW. I also did the same thing at the Poly, and it was accepted fine. I don't drive so I don't have a license to show, I've had my provisional knocked back several times.
I'm not saying you're wrong re: the Photoshop comment, but sometimes they will still accept a photocopy.

I am genuinely surprised - but am happy to be corrected. I'm over 40 [and certainly look way over 21] and have been ID'd regularly in Florida - never had the driving licence refused though, but the girl serving us in Epcot was from County Durham, so probably quite familiar with UK driving licences.

You're very lucky and the exception to the rule. I asked my daughter, she's a bartender, she said she'd be fired if she accepted a photocopied ID. They're only allowed an original government issued ID.

We have used laminated copy of passports for years (colour). We don't have a photo driving license but like to keep our passports safely locked away. Never had a problem with them
