Paying in US Dollars

Hi
Interested in a villa and the owner wishes us to pay in dollars if possible or he will have to pass on the bank charges

What is the safest and cheapest method of paying this without incurring extra charges but covered for end failure if possible

Thanks

We pay by credit card, ours has no charges if we pay in another currency, such as $ or Euros.

This also gives you the added benefit of the section 75 payment protection law.
If anything did go wrong, your credit card provider would need to refund you.

You have to make a minimum payment of £100 with your CC for the flight/holiday or purchase for this to be available.

Edit- Our CC is with Halifax.

Pay by credit card and they will convert it to $. Depending on the card they may charge you for the conversion.

get a Halifax Clarity CC. no transaction fees if paying in a foreign currency or the JaJa credit card, (transfers from the Post Office credit card) same details as Halifax. Plus, you get a much better FX rate. I use my card for all my holiday spends be it Europe or the US. My next villa will be paying in US dollars, I really dont have a problem with it.

Never use your standard CC to pay for anything in Euros or US dollars as the transaction fees might make your eyes water.

Not all cc's are free of charges for paying in a currency, you need to check the t&c's of your cc.

Be very careful, I think what you are suggesting would be classed as a cash advance by the CC company and therefore wouldn't have purchase cover.

What does using your credit card “through wise” mean?

They are a money transfer service - formerly known as 'Transferwise' if I've understood the post correctly. Which is why I've cautioned against it being treated as a cash advance.
