FizzyWhip, I also use gates which keep mine in my kitchen when I'm out. My latest rescue, she's a golden retriever and ex-breeders are always confined, (kennels etc) in the most horrible conditions and house training takes a little longer, but after 3 months we are almost there. So even in older dogs, it still works and with no crates/cages.

Blimey - I didn't even know Goldens ended up in rescue centres x Such beautiful dogs.. I might have to google. I work from home and would love a dog so we could keep each other company.

We put an old jumper which one of us had be wearing for a bit, to have our scent on for the night times. Also a wee soft toy thing that had a heart beat in it that went in at night time too. Cried a wee bit during the night, but did not take long for her to settle.
We also used crates, covered them up, since then our westie loves being under blankets, and you would not know hes there.

We didnt like puppy pads , also that seems to take longer to train that way.
Like the idea that we / poo etc is down outside and outside only not on a pad in house .

We used puppy pads for 1 night and then sacked off that idea.

We put a bell on the door (our old lab used to knock the door to say he wanted out) and every time woody touched the bell we rewarded him, put him outside and said go wees. Toilet trained really well and uses the bell to let us know he needs to go out ❤️ Even when he was staying st my house and my sisters, he used the bell.

We didnt take him out every half an hour. You learn when theyre gonna go very quickly, after a nap, after food, after play, etc etc but we didnt take him out every half hour. He is also crate trained and is in his crate during the day as we work. My sister goes to mum and dads at lunch time for an hour and lets him out. Dads self employed so it home at random times and my fianc works shifts. So between us theres loads of help.

Make sure he does get used to being left in the crate when youre not there because otherwise you may struggle when you have to go out to the shops/out for dinner etc. Always start young .

We had a person in our puppy group that refused to leave them in the crate because someone would always be home. Obviously there came a time when not everyone was home the the dog really really struggled.

Sod the rules, sod what everyone thinks you must do... no sofa, no bed, strict rules on food...

LOVE your little one... he is leaving his mum, he needs love, comfort and everything any baby needs.

Dogs are wonderful, the only sad part is they break your heart in the end.

Enjoy every moment of your little one... xxxx
