Disney (and Universal and Seaworld) already do charge for photos. They charge $15 (I think) for one photo or $199 for all photos in your account (aka. Memory Maker). They've charged for photos for many years.
They aren't installing "booths". They are adding automated cameras. Sure, the quality of some photos might suffer (in some cases they may even be better - I'd had some Photopass photographers take rubbish photos) but no one is setting up chargeable booths. What Disney is doing is replacing two CMs - one character handler and one unskilled photographer - with one CM at the fixed location character meets. It's a cost cutting measure that should have little impact on guests experience.

This whilst a shame is true, if the cm with the characters can just press a button whilst it’s in the fixed position it’s no worse then a cm with a tripod on full auto mode! Though for some character meets it effects the photos being dynamic (ie the photographer being able to capture the face of the child as the see the characters)
I can see how in certain spots a scan the magic band it counts down and takes the picture could come in handy, but it would still need a CM to make sure it didn’t get out of hand!

Apologies, I'm not sure what you mean by your last statement? Disney aren't installing spots where you scan your MagicBand and then it counts down and takes your photo. Instead, at some indoor character meets there's going to be a CM who presses a button and takes your photo from some fixed cameras. See here for info:
wdwnt/2019/09/photos-aut...magic-kingdom/ Now, I can see that the quality of the photos might not be as good as they were. And, like most other people, I would prefer it if a professional trained photographer took the photos. I just wanted to clarify what was happening here. Personally, I would never pay for Memory Maker - I've always found it incredibly overpriced. But considering it's included with the Ultimate tickets for "free", then I find that it's great value for money, automated photos or not.
