Yes, there is a bit of a slope in the north west corner but it shouldn't be too difficult to navigate on a bike.
The far end is over a 15% gradient for about a 3rd of mile or so. There are two different routes at the.north west end of which one avoids the really steep parts. Sounds like you did that one. Both are around the same distance.

Walking up it is actually easier than cycling it for most.

More than that though, here is also very little to see at that end so if you are limited to a couple of hours you will waste 30 minutes of that for no real reason. I would go down as far as 97th street and take the path across there.

We go the 18th Sept and this is something we want to do - but cant decide between this and the Central Park movies walk - do you see the film stuff in the normal walk cos I cant decide which one seems best.

We rented bikes last week with Unlimited too, the walk to the park was a bit hectic and we went on a Saturday so the cycle lane was quite busy. We did 2 laps of the park and stopped off for a picnic. We hired the bikes for 4 hours and dropped them back at about 3.5hrs, we booked ours through Groupon and just paid an extra $1.99 insurance on each bike.
