Travelling between the Irish Republic and the UK after Brexit
For those of us who travel to and From Dublin for York teansatlantuc flights, Dublin Airport has issued this fact sheet on travelling after Brexit. Unless you choose to buy duty free there seems to be little or zero difference

Thanks WM, very straightforward and without all the scare/panic hype (anybody would think we're going to implode!). As we don't buy fags or booze there's basically no difference.

We've always had a special agreement with The Irish Republic. You don't need a passport to go there because of it, although airlines seem to want it as id, but thats not the only way to get there.

Some eastern european countries give a card that has passport info on it, their national ID card generally has the same info & validity as a passport.

Its most European countries, national identity cards are acceptable for travel inside Europe. The ID cards that are issued by have the same level of information that a passport does. There are only a few that dont issues them and there are also some that issue that arent compliant so cant be used. We can only use a passport because thats all we have. Its a misconception that a driving licence is acceptable as all it proves if the person can drive a car. |

The Irish government also issues an ID card which can be used instead of a passport- husband has one as well as his passport and uses it on trips to Ireland.

Yes, isn’t that part of the Schengen Agreement of free movement within the EU, the UK never bought into that agreement

Schengen abolished intra country checks on the land borders in the EU. The free movement of EU nationals is Treaty of Rome. The reason we don’t use ID cards is we don’t have them. The purpose of the immigration check at any UK border is firstly to confirm identity and nationality and government issued ID cards of EU nationals to appropriate standard allows the immigration officer to confirm that the free movement (within reason and subject to certain conditions such as no threat to public health, public policy) applies to the person presenting it.
