Checking in your wheelchair at the airport

Do you keep your wheelchair as long as possible?

Or, change to an airport model (if possible) and check in with luggage?
And bag up - marked as 'fragile'?

I am a permanent wheelchair user and keep my chair all the way up to the plane door where I transfer into the airplane chair to get to my seat. Then my chair is taken and put in the hold. It is normally tagged at the gate prior to boarding and when I arrive it is waiting for me at the plane door to get back into.

We take my DD wheelchair all the way to plane door & she isn't permanent user but we always get it tagged at check in
