Travelling with crutches

My daughter 21 is currently having a flare up of her auto-immune condition. We fly to Orlando in 7 weeks time as a belated 21st pressie. She is currently intermittently using elbow crutches due to her joint pains. We hope she will be feeling better by the time we travel but if they are still needed, has anyone experience of taking crutches onto the plane etc... we are travelling indirect with BA- EDI-LGW-MCO?

Poor thing! You could check with them to be sure but I think she'll be fine as long as you're not in an exit seat. I'd ask at the gate too about pre-boarding just to give her a bit of extra time

DD has travelled with elbow crutches on two occasions. She was allowed to board early and we had no problems at all. At MCO the crutches were dismantled and searched which caused only a slight delay.

I had to travel with crutches last year as I tore my calf muscle just before we went. It was fine, we arranged airport assistance (Thomas Cook), so we were one of the first on and could store them in the overhead locker. I needed assistance in Orlando and I was last off the plane and someone collected me in a wheelchair.

Thanks everyone for your replies- Hoping she will be off the crutches before holidays but I think she should take them anyway just in case of problems while we are away. That's reassuring about having them on the plane. x

Have you considered hiring a scooter while you're there? She'll feel so much better not having to haul herself around on crutches all day, not to mention the fact that she'll be rested from not exerting herself so much and, hopefully, not possibly in pain for much of the time.

I certainly pay the £10 a day for the privilege of not being knackered all the time and having to take rests all the time! (I have osteoarthritis in my knees and can't walk far).

We went in 2015 and our son uses crutches due to poor stability /trouble walking.
He uses a wheelchair for long distance so we had the special assistance right up to the gate which helps emensley as u seen to get the time to settle properly without the hustle and bustle . Once out of his chair he was able to use his crutches right up to his seat on the plane where the air hostess took them and stowed them in the nearest overhead locker (2seats in front)If I was you id ring and request special assistance at the airport (both ends) as that way you will get help and assistance for your daughter wethere she is having a good day or not and honestly don't worry about the crutches x
Ps if you are flying Ba u can book through the website on your booking page - that's how I've done it for this year x happy holidays x

I presently am trying to persuade her about a scooter or wheelchair but so far she is dead set against this idea! Her joints were bad 2 yrs ago when we visited (but at that point she was undiagnosed)- she managed most days by pacing herself and having frequent rests- the only day she struggled with was Busch Gardens due to lots of walking crammed into one day. She is currently on steroids for the flare up and she has a hospital review on the 10th May so hoping that with some tweaks to her medication she will be feeling much better by the time 20th June comes around.
