Come across to the DVC forum, lots of info and advice there.
However it is essentially a points based timeshare. You buy a number of points at a home resort for a capital cost and you get those points every year to use at your home resort, or you can use at other resorts subject to availability. Each year you will pay dues (service charge essentially) calculated on a price per point. |

Actually the $17000 is probably light by about $1500! But that's buying Direct from Disney, you can also consider Resale & in most cases half that amount. There are a couple of things that you need to decide straight off: When, how long & type of room - Every room for every night has a set points cost, you add this up to give you the "cost" in points. US owners tend to have several shorter holidays but "us" UK owners tend to have longer holidays for the same amount of points.
It's not a way of having cheap holidays as you can stay offsite far cheaper but if you want to stay in more "Deluxe" resorts then it's a good way to do it. This shouldn't be an impulse decision, really do you homework, it's very easy to buy in then get the mind set of look how much this would have been. I reckon by the time our contract expires we will have spent +£40k - initial buy in plus dues. You are also subjecting yourself to constant saving as you will always need flights etc. We regret not buying sooner but at the time bigger rooms offsite suited our family needs. SD

I just bought 160 Saratoga points for about £8500 after renting the banked points from last year that came with it.

Buy resale. Save a ton. If you are going summer holidays particularly in a 1 bed you can book any resort at 7 months, so buy the cheapest (including dues) which is Saratoga. I just booked Animal Kingdom and Poly no probs in August and September. I looked again last week and for 1 beds in August even places like Boardwalk were still open- now only 4 months out. Don't worry about exchanging points out of Disney to cruises etc, bad use of points you can just rent your points and pay cash which is better. Perks not high value usually for brit visitor so get ressale

It's hard to explain in simple words as it's complicated initially.
You buy a set number of points st a resort which you can then spend on Disney accommodation. We bought 173 points at the Boardwalk. This gets us approx 11 nights in a studio in high season or a fortnight in a cheaper season. Or we can combine points from the previous and following years to stay longer,or in bigger accommodation or at a different resort. We bought resale which was significantly cheaper than buying direct. Bear in mind your annual dues would pay for an offsite hotel so you aren't saving money as such. Just staying somewhere nicer. |
