Also be aware that points differ according to time of year so this is OK if you are planning the same period every year,but not if you might change some years.

That is good advice. As to number of points required, the calculator on Davids- dvcrequest.com is actually an invaluable tool for for the prospective purchaser- being able to mess around with resorts, room types and dates to work out how many points you'll need to buy

Also don't forget that if you bank a years points and then can't or don't travel you'll lose the banked ones. Points can only be banked once.
