if you're asked, thats what you tell them (well, the clean version ).
I regularly travel abroad with just my daughter (same surname) including to and from the US, have never been asked for a letter from her Dad. I always take a letter from parents though when I take my nieces, or my daughter's friend, with us, and more often than not I'm asked for that letter, when returning to the UK. |

My ex tried to stop me from taking my then 6 year old son to florida in 2014... the court ruled that I could take him, in term time as well. I had all the paperwork with me to go through immigration as was super scared in case ex called the borders with some crazy abduction story or something but we didn't need it.
This year my stepson is able to come with us so I've just asked his mum to write us a letter to say she is happy for him to be on holiday with us. Will let you know what happens because stepson changed his surname from husband's to mum's maiden name a few yrs ago so he has a different family name to the rest of us. |

remember to get mum to add in her letter that she gives your husband authority to permit any necessary medical treatment for the child while abroad. As ilivehereorland posted on another thread earlier, it will make things much easier if treatment is needed at short notice.

At the UK Border immigration have a duty to make sure that children travelling are safe and that may involve asking them more questions. they are doing their job and unfortunately in these horrible times we live in there have been instances of children and young adults being trafficked or smuggled into the UK. I have attached a wee link to the old leaflet, it does say UK Border Agency but the duties haven't changed since it became Border Force. I have never known any officer to require a notarised anything and usually a few questions to the child like ; did you have a nice holiday' and ' who did you go with' are enough for them to see the child is ok and happy. Seems basic and sometimes people feel its intrusive but its what they have to do. Not in every case but when they feel the extra check is required to satisfy thm.

Not the same but may help someone in future. Last year in Spain my passport and two teenage daughters were stolen from room.
At the consulate next morning (was late night before when realised when packing to go home they had gone) we were all asked where their dad was. I explained he had died 7 years before. They said I needed to show the death certificate before they could issue emergency travel documents. I had to ring my daughter back home who had to leave work go to mine and email a copy through all with under 5 hours to go to flight. To cap it all they were doing repairs at the building in Alicante and the electric was due to be off from 10 to 2. We were on the doorstep at 8.40 waiting for them to open We managed to just make the flight as we all had to be interviewed supposedly separately but managed to get them agree to me being in room for girls as although teenagers are both autistic and I was dreading what answers they would come out with ( I can laugh now I wasn't at the time). I now carry a copy of Death Certificate just in case as I had never thought I would need it on holiday. |

I took my DDs to Florida without DH a couple of years ago (same surname). It never even occurred to me that I would need a letter and we were absolutely fine. However, coming back from Gran Canaria last year DH and DD2 were stopped at Gatwick and asked several questions. I was there too, with DD1 but they didn't speak to me or DD1 at all. They checked DH and DD2's passport (reallychecked) and asked her quite a lot of questions. She was 13 so well able to answer for herself but she found it quite scary. We did wonder at the time whether she fitted a particular description.
