St Augustine

Hi

So I am taking my boyfriend on a special trip to St Augustine. Both of us love history.

I am not sure what tour to book. I am not driving as it is too expensive (especially as I am younger than 25). I am stuck between land train or the Colonial Quarter trip.

Has anyone had experience of any of these excursions?

Cheers

Holly

We did the Old Town trolley tour in September. It was good but to be honest if you're young and fit walking would be just as good. It's just the heat might be a bit much. There are 23 stops but some of them are only yards apart. It's a lovely city. You'll enjoy it.

The centre of St Augustine is quite compact and, in my view, is best explored on foot - I've been several times and that is what I do. There are several trolley tours, but you will need to keep getting on and off to look at the various historic sites anyway, so why not just stroll between them. St George St (the main tourist street) is pedestrianised. The Colonial Quarter is just one of the attractions, like the Castillo (go at the weekend when they demonstrate firing the cannon), and oldest school, oldest house, etc. The only 'attraction' on the trolley route that is a bit out of town is the Old Jail. The lighthouse and the beach are not on the trolley route. Don't forget there is a winery, the distillery, the chocolate and scenic cruise. Enjoy.

Colonial Quarter isn't worth paying for IMO. The Castillo is and the Pirate museum. Distillery, winery etc are free. Everything is within walking distance.

Restaurants we like. (There's hundreds)

A1A Aleworks right across from the marina
Churchills right across from marina (50 odd beers on tap)
Barefoot Bills, end of the little enclosed shopping row on St George Street, last on the right before you get to the plaza
Athena Greek restaurant in the plaza
PizzaAlley Chianti Room Italian on Charlotte Street
Cuban Cafe on Hypolita 1/2 block off St George Street
Burger Bucket corner of Orange and Cordova near the Visitors Information Center/Parking Garage.
Harry's Cajun on the bay front.
Barley Republic Irish Pub on Spanish Street
Mojo's BBQ on Cordova
Zaharias Greek on the beach on A1A
Cafe 11 on the beach on A1A
Casa Maria Mexican (not Tex/Mex) on the beach in the Publix plaza off A1A

Thank you all!

Sounds like there is much more to St Augustine than I originally envisioned!

Glad that it is compact to walk around, I actually have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and so my joints are generally painful.

Next I'll just have to the hard job of picking what to do.

If you can't walk too well and don't fancy the hop on hop off trolley I can recommend Gold Tours. It's a private (or maybe one more couple) on a quiet six seat electric cart. Goes to some places the trolleys don't. Last time we took visitors it was $25.

That looks really good and not a bad price either.

Will certainly consider it

I would also recommend the Flagler college tour.
