MOT on BMW **Update**

We need to get the MOT done on our car and since moving we have lost the guy who services and does it for us. We recently had to get new shocks and the mechanic that did it said that he couldn’t see anything that would fail. DH has checked all the tyres, water, oil etc and also the bulbs.Everything was fine except for the indicator on the drivers side wing mirror - back and front fine. Will this fail it? Also it does flash on/off when you lock/unlock car just not when you indicate🥴 Anyone have any ideas, Google wasn’t that helpful and being a BMW, garage checking it will be pricey😫 Thanks guys👍

I have no idea if it will fail sorry thus I am no use to you!

However I had mine done at National Tyres for £27 and there is a promo on their website to get this price.

The Car was due a service the following week and the Guy in Sytner said they would have matched that price. Spooky that!

Maybe ask to speak to the MOT Guy in National first?

Edit. A Google says yes it's a fail but that is from sites like Piston Head etc and I don't know how accurate they are. Best of luck as repairs are pricey!

Thanks, we had seen several promos on MOT’S and are planning to use one a few mins walk from us, a tyre company as well at £29.99! They also offer free retest if you have them do the work needed - so not sure about that! We have thought if the car has them they need to be working, so it would fail😢 However DH wonders if it is just the car being smart and actually depends which way you are turning so will check again today!

In another spooky moment - our car came from Synters in Cardiff although via a broker nearly 9 years ago. DH was worried about the mileage but they trailered it down to us in Southampton!

I always use Sytner and my current one which is being bought back by Sytner I bought unseen.
It was in Tamworth, 3 months old with 9 miles on the clock. Got driven down though and then sold to me by the branch in Cardiff.
I think my new one is en route from S.Africa. Well I hope it is!

I'm 99% sure any light on a car has to work or its a MOT failure

fwiw older cars used to have side indicators typically on the wing, these have largely been replaced by indicators on the mirrors so in your case you will im guessing be missing the side indicator?

Just to confirm the wing repeater is a fail, however a technical look at the regulation if a front indicator can be seen from side and flashes between 60 to 120 beeps per minute and is orange then that meets the requirement. All cars from mid 80s had a requirement for repeaters.
Alot of customizers fit aftermarket repeaters to pass mot then remove them a bit of faf if your not into cars probably a new bulb strip required.
15 to 50 quids depending on model and new or used.

does the side indicator work when the hazard warning lights are switched on ?

the fact that you say the wing mirror indicator flashes when the car is locked and un locked suggests that the light unit is still operational for some functions so could be a wiring issue in the direction indicator circuit rather than a light strip blown or non functioning

this would require further investigation but l wouldn't be rushing to buy a replacement indicator unit

and yes a non function indicator is a fail (major)

Sounds like you will have to get it looked at as I agree it will be a fail. We have always used and Authorised Independent BMW specialist, they have all the software and tools but half the price of BMW direct. The Service Books and On Line information is always logged and updated. May be worth looking to see if you have one locally.

Thanks everyone, dh has had it apart and it seems one of the wires must have a break in it - inside the sleeving🥴 He has managed to fix it and we are planning to get the MOT done tomorrow to stop it having a chance to break again😉 Sod’s law says it will fail on something else now but hey ho! Thanks again😁

Finally got it MOT'd today after it was cancelled as their kit had broken down.

Unfortunately it failed - not on the wing mirror indicator or to be honest not even something really dangerous - but that the horn doesn't work! Seriously why is that a major fault? Anyway dh is now finding where it is and hoping he can fix it - cars who have 'em
