Stick with Dec or move to Feb/Mar

We are due to travel on 27th Dec but getting nervous of all the testing needed and the number of cases there may be by then. We are considering moving the trip until end of Feb and beginning of March - but do you think things will have improved at all by then - or could it be worse? I know no one knows what is going to happen next - so can't really advise, but is anyone else having similar thoughts and what have you decided to to?

I am really worried I just will feel really stressed the whole time about testing positive whilst out there, so perhaps delaying is best, but don't know when to push it too - preferably earlier as we have a trip planned already for Aug so want to go asap. This is our Aug 20 trip pushed to Aug 21 then Dec 21...

There is going to be a COVID review today (apparently according to Radio 4) rather than Dec 18/20th to the rules may well change (again )

I don't see the increased testing being removed over winter, so I think you'd be in the exact same position in Feb compared to going now. Possibly worse if this variant does pick up and become a wave like Delta did, since it takes several weeks for that to be seen in the data - especially with hospitalisations since they lag behind behind cases.

Totally understand your anxiety. All the new rules and changes coming with with new varient & winter can be overwhelming & the unknown a little scary!

I think you need to do what's best for you. We've just come back, we missed the testing before the return home but the rest was pretty straight forward.

The only thing I would suggest is if you do move it I'd move it to around May even though you go again August. If you move it to Feb we are still in winter so you might not be any better off than going this month

Thanks both - I will see what the info is in the update later - I suppose it isn't really the testing itself, but I now feel our chances of testing positive have increased with this new variant and the amount of cases there may be around, particularly in crowded theme parks over new year - I am not sure when the peak of cases of it is expected? It is really hard to make a decision, thanks for replying

I am still planning on going (20 Dec) to CA and have my Disney tickets but I feel in my gut it won't be able to happen - more down to flight restrictions as they who don't follow the rules are in panic mode

Thank you and that is exactly my worry - that I will have to move it again and like many of you I am completely over the yo-yo of thinking we are going and then not and cancelling and rebooking stuff. It is very stressful - but we can only move things if we decide not to go - we can't get refunds at this stage - otherwise I would think I would do that! Thank you!

If what the WHO says works out to be true (Omicron is less severe than current dominant variants) then there would be no real reason to increase any restrictions...

bbc/news/world-59573037
But the WHO's Dr Mike Ryan said there was no sign Omicron would be better at evading vaccines than other variants.

"We have highly effective vaccines that have proved effective against all the variants so far, in terms of severe disease and hospitalisation, and there's no reason to expect that it wouldn't be so" for Omicron, Dr Ryan, the WHO's emergencies director, told AFP news agency.

He said initial data suggested Omicron did not make people sicker than the Delta and other strains. "If anything, the direction is towards less severity," he said.

Let's see what today's update brings - I hope you get to go if that is what you want - I am just feeling it is all a bit too stressful at the moment, so think I am leaning to pulling out but not sure when to rebook for. The sensible answer is put it a few months away but I want to go sooner if we can - ha ha!
