I spent hours in the woods hunting them down. My diss records the 7000 I found, combined total of 3 species. I think I actually found about 70! Oops!

Legend has it that large masses of them in rotting timbers (Possibly rotting river ships and barges) give off a cheesy odor. So the nickname Cheesy Bug, or Cheese Log further up the river, would work with that theory.

If I ever get drawn back into studying them (I wont! ) I'll remember that. Could test it by taking a cheesy sarnie/ buttie/sub/hoagie!

Woodlice are Slaters where I was raised. I did not even realise they were the same thing for decades.
