Irish Foreign Birth Register

My DS18 has come to me and wants to start the process of applying for an Irish passport. His grandparent was born in Ireland so needs to go on the foreign birth register. He's gone to our register office to get a copy of his birth certificate and is waiting for that to come back before starting the application. Has anyone got any advice on how long the whole process takes? Thanks!

We have been planning to do the same (apply for Irish passport) but not yet got round to it 🤕.
Ours is simpler as we have Irish parents so no need to register but I’m aware that the number of UK applicants for Irish passports has increased massively with Brexit & wait times have suffered.

Found this on government Irish website

Registering a foreign birth. At present, it takes between 9 to 12 months to process a completed Foreign Birth Registration application. However, due to the complex nature of the Foreign Birth Registration, it may take up to 12 months to process an application.Oct 21, 2019

I did it for both of my children 20 years ago and it took 6 months then, I know it’s now at least double that because of Brexit.
I would advise your son start gathering certificates now so he is ready to proceed as this can take some time in itself:
He will need, his birth certificate, yours or yours husbands (depending on which side is Irish) birth certificate, your marriage certificate, his grandparents birth and marriage certificate (and death certificate if applicable)
Good luck!

How do you get hold of a birth certificate of a grandparent who is no longer with us? Having spoken to my mum (her parents were Irish) none of her family have copies of the certificates, and even if they did, it would be very hard to get hold of them as they are utterly useless in that respect. I have been thinking about going through with the whole process but I wouldn't know where to start! My mum has a British passport, but 2 of her 7 siblings have Irish ones but they moved back to Ireland in the 70's so a different process!

Contact the births and register in Ireland depending on where your ancestors are from

www2.hse.ie/services/births-...te-online.html

You’ll need

Order a birth certificate

You can order a birth certificate online or in person at any civil registration service.

To get a birth certificate you need to provide:

full birth name on the certificate
date of birth or approximate date if known
place of birth
gender
father's full name, if recorded
mother's full birth name

You will also need marriage and death certificates etc

This is a useful website

Mum is Irish and I'm looking to do the same, she married in the uk, do I still need her marriage certificate? I know I need to order her birth certificate but I have all the details and I have my 'long' birth certificate too.

If ordering certs from Ireland, only use the hse.ie website. That is the official site for them. Lots of third party sites around that charge more than the €20 it costs to get copy certs.

Our daughter did this a few years ago. It took about 9 months to get on the register of foreign births, then about 6 months to get the passport.
