Keloids

Hi all

Up until last night, I had never heard of keloids. My DD11 had her ears pierced in June this year and they don't seem to be healing too well but not so much that I have been concerned enough to worry as I know they can take up to a year.

Yesterday, she developed a sudden lump behind her ear lobe which is now pushing the earring back out of position. Of course I Googled it and it looks to me like it's a keloid.

We took her to out of hours doctors this morning as she was complaining of it hurting and they thought it was some kind of an infection. She has been given a strong course of antibiotics.

This evening she is complaining of it itching which is another sign of these keloid things.

My husband is convinced it isn't a keloid as it just appeared but I am not sure if they can just appear.

Does anyone have any experience of these please? I was so careful where I took her for her piercings and waited until we thought she was old enough etc and now I feel as though I have let her down massively.

Thanks for any advice x

If the antibiotics don't reduce the inflammation it may well be a keloid which can be reduced by steroid injection. They are usually slow to form.
More common in darker skin & those aged 10-30 yrs. Ear piercing is a known area for keloid.
If it is keloid please don't have further piercings as it will prob occur again.
Don't beat yourself up about letting her down, you haven't.

I had my daith pierced a few years ago and developed a keloid (had my ear lobes pierced as a child with no issues). The Drs wanted be to take the piercing out but it was stopping my migraines so I wanted to keep it if possible. I just kept bathing it in salt water and it got better in a couple of months.

Thank you for your reply. Do you know if they typically develop under the skin and then pop out suddenly as there was definitely nothing there before yesterday around midday time? My husband said it wouldn't just appear but she has always been one to be different, lol. She definitely won't be having any more piercings.

Thank you for your reply. I will give this a go. Did you use rock salt? I am tempted to remove the piercings altogether tbh but then I am sure it will be even worse with two open wounds. Funny how the body reacts to different situations

I'd say follow the doctor's advice, you only got the antibiotics today. You need to let them get into her system and see if they work.

Thank you. She is being a little minx at taking them as it's the first time she has had anything in tablet form I am tempted to call the doctor to try and get in liquid form.

I just used table salt. I had a number of different dr’s opinions as it first started hurting when we were away in our caravan. Went to a walk in and they gave me antibiotics. When home went to my dr’s who gave me more anti b’s and told me to take it out as he was sceptical it did anything for migraines.

But when I returned to my dr’s (for something else) the younger woman partner was really interested and suggested I asked the piercer for advice.

He was the one who said salt water bathing and it was just the bodies way of reacting to what it saw as a foreign body.

Once it had healed I’ve had no further problem at all.

Hi, you’ve not let your Daughter down, unfortunately it’s just one of those things. Keloids are a type of scar and don’t usually just appear. Sounds more likely that it is a small abscess/localised infection.

As a side note, as somebody with a friend who has prominent keloids (which she is very conscious of) sharing that you are ‘grossed out by them’ can come across as a little insensitive
