Mobile Castaway Cay 5K and kids

Dh and I would really like to try the 5K at Castaway.

Dd would like to as well but she’ll be 4 weeks off turning 10 so it doesn’t look like she can.

Do all those running have to start together or could we take turns and still get the medal at the end so that 1 of us can stay with dd? She’d like to see us cross the line.

I’ve read older reports where kids could join in even though it’s listed as 10+, does anyone know if they actually enforce the age limit?

I’ve done this race a few times and there absolutely categorically have been children a lot younger than ten doing it.

No under 10s and please don't try to add her as it makes it very awkward for the CM in charge.
Over the past year or so they have become a lot stricter on the ages .
which is a good thing.

They have different waves of starts now too which could help you have someone with DD, or you could put her in the club for that short period of time. It's on the island and opens before the run starts.

Bear in mind, if you're not used to running, I can tell you it's hot with little shade.

But, my overriding thing is - please don't ask if she can do it as it makes it really awkward and horrible for the CMs.

Apologies Bellasmum, it has obviously changed since I did this in 2014, 2015 and 2017. I can’t imagine the starts would be so staggered you could both run - it’s such a small number of people running? I wonder why they started that (do you know Joa?). It makes sense for the special runs linked to RunDisney weekends (the number of runners then is a lot bigger but even then I think the corrals - all three of them - went off three minutes apart) but it surprises me for the regular 5k.

I think the different start times are more for the Dream/Fantasy as more people. It was just manic at the start with all those people at once jostling for position (I know right!). Defo not enough time for both to run separately - just chuck the child in the Oceaneers (don't literally chuck!) and enjoy the run before collecting them.

The process does seem to depend on the different sailings as some meet in a lounge to get bibs etc and some meet on CC and then start at intervals.
Best bet is to check at Guest Services before CC day for sure.
Joa

The clock is manned for a good while, probably up to about an hour.

If you can run a 5k in 20 mins each you could easily both do it.

Remember - it's not a race, it's a run. For free. Abuse it and it will disappear.

We had to laugh the last time - there was competitive mom bragging about her college scholarship uber runner son. He was beaten by an unassuming 15 year old girl by 90 seconds. My wife said the mom was making all kinds of excuses about how her son was tapering for a big run in a few weeks. Yeah right.

Love this story!

As to both being able to do a 20 minute 5k... that would be way outside of my capability

I found I ran slower too because of the heat and humidity. It really made a difference (I found it much worse than FL runs).

I think that's a great story too :

I'm hoping to do the Castaway Cay 5k in August. My best treadmill time is a sub 34 and I've only just started running outside so my best there is a sub 38 unfortunately I keep getting a hip injury when I run outside so I'm working on that at the moment. I'll be happy enough with any time at Castaway Cay given the heat, humidity and the fact it's on day 10 of an 11 day cruise
