American Airlines hand luggage

Hi all,
We are flying Dub-Phl-Mco with AA (codeshare with BA) We are wondering if anyone knows how much hand luggage allowance we are allowed. We have booked with BA and theirs is 23kg but cant find anything on AA, just case dimensions. TIA

We flew home with them last year, they didn’t mention weight, just size and they didn’t weigh hand luggage either so I guess they don’t care how much it weighs but I would just make sure it’s under 23kg anyway.

Flew AA yesterday and they had the same kind of size things that Easyjet/Ryanair. I saw a couple of people having their roller cases checked at the gate as it wouldnt sit in the size frame.

To be honest though on the internal flight from Chicago to Miami there were so many roller cases that there didnt seem to be much restriction!

We flew American airlines in February Man to Philadelphia to Orlando. Paid £45 going out for a 23kgs suitcase and $60 coming home. Hand luggage allowance was a hand bag and a cabin case but total weight for the 2 no more than 8kgs.

If you booked through BA you get the same baggage allowance that you would with them. We did exactly this in December for New York. Incidentally we booked main cabin extra on the AA site - it was £70 pp each way and we were actually sat in the PE seats. Think it was row 13. Not sure if you'd be interested in that.

Thanks for the replies
sully, we have already booked seats in main cabin extra. We booked the bulkhead seats so hopefully we won't have anyone reclining in front

excellent, the ones we had were row 13 exit row - they were the premium seats, the ones in the cabin behind were still main cabin extra but in normal seats. May be worth checking

This is wrong. AA does not have a weight limit for hand luggage, only a size limit.

That’s the situation for checked bags, OP is asking about hand luggage. The rule with hand luggage is that it’s always the allowance of the operating carrier, in this case AA.

AA and BA have slightly different hand luggage size allowances. AA has a smaller limit than BA for the larger piece (55x36x23cm), and a slightly larger limit for the personal item (45x35x20). The personal item limit isn’t policed as much, as long as it fits under the seat. The larger item may well be placed in a sizer, especially on some domestic routes.

that's not what BA told us prior to our trip last December when we went to New York

Well, if related to hand luggage, you were misinformed. It’s always the allowances of the operating carrier for hand luggage, without exception. The rules are different for checked bags, depending on where you’re flying and which airline marketed the flights.

Unfortunately BA’s call centre staff are not always clued up on these things, especially when relating to the rules of another carrier, even their partners. They could have course have found the correct information about AA hand baggage allowances on the BA website...

Travelling with other airlines

Your free hand baggage allowance, i.e. the total number of bags, size and weight, varies depending on the airline that is operating your flight.
