cat tracking/locating - any decent tech solutions? (plus, new cat!)

so we got a new cat the other day. her name is boognish (boo for short) and she's really good at hiding...

we're keeping her indoors at the moment (at least for the next few weeks) but yesterday she disappeared in the house twice. the first time i was going nuts thinking she had snuck out the door when i went to empty the litter tray contents in the bin... turns out she was hiding under the shelf in the washing machine cupboard (with the washer on!)

then later that day she got into the garage and hid in there for a few more hours. problem is, its a mess in there, and *so* many hidey holes, its not funny. a reflective collar with a bell on hasnt helped.

does anyone have any decent technical solutions? i'll worry about outdoor/gps tracking later, right now, i'm mostly interesting in finding her inside the house! (its a weird shape house, there are hidey holes all over the place) - i'm thinking some sort of bluetooth/RF transmitter on her collar that will help me at least work out which room she is in, some sort of "getting hotter/colder" locator app/device would be perfect, maybe based on signal strength?

also, if anyone has any sort of recommendations/advice on an external gps/RF tracker that has more than a day or two of life between charges, and ideally one without a ridiculous subscription fee too.

oh, whatever the solution, it needs to be small! the tinier, then better, she's not a big cat...

I seriously wouldn't worry, get her a collar with your number on and make sure she is chipped. If you haven't had her long she just needs time to settle in.
I have 2 of my cats for nearly 2 years and 1 of them Belle loves to hide.
Cats own you 😻😻

you say don't worry, but we spent pretty much all of yesterday worrying! and that was knowing she was inside the house...

(didnt have a problem with our last cat. but he was a chonk so could be located easily most of the time)

No ideas to help as we don't have cats anymore, but just wanted to say she's gorgeous!

Never have tried tracking mine so no help then sorry.
Cats are led by their tummies so if you know she is in the house leave all internal doors open and she will go to food.

she is just probably hiding as still nervous and finding her feet - perhaps only let her explore a couple of rooms initially.

She's hiding because she's scared, leave her be.

At Cats Protection, we always recommend keeping them in 1 room for the first 2-3 days. Then allow them entry to extra rooms over the next 2-3 weeks.

Imagine being thrown into a massive area and being expected to be ok about it - poor Boo is scared, that's why she's hiding.

When you can get her, lock her in one room only for a couple of days. Pop clothes you have worn into that room so she can get used to the different scents of the house. Make sure she has litter tray, food and water 24 x7 of course.

Concerning that you didn't get this info when you adopted her.

the layout of our house makes it quite difficult (think of it as a bungalow spread across three floors) to keep her to one area

we got info when we adopted her, and we've had a cat previously, but she loves to hide (and stay/sleep there)

my main worry is something like her getting into the garage, then getting trapped under something. being able to at least confirm she is in that room would be a massive help to us...

I’ve used loc8ator for the last few years with our cat. Doesn’t use gps, but handheld device and collar fob. Good within about 50 metres, and series of lights on handheld light up as you get nearer. It will work through walls, so good if you need to check they’re not locked in a garage, or hiding in the house!

ooh, that looks perfect!

however, i've just ordered a pack of tile mates based on chatting to a mate on twitter. they will be arriving later today, so will see how i get on... if they arent suitable, i might give that a try, thanks

(tile mates were £45 for 4 or £15 each. the longer range pro is around £25)
