That was my thought but you need to have AP installed on your phone for this to work properly and usually you have to press a button on the screen to activate AP as well.

A lot of people see the Apple Play screen and think AP looks the same but it is not as well developed (I often spend an irritating 10 secs shouting at it to tell it I want to use whats app not text messaging and give up the tenth time it ask me )

Apple Play isn’t a separate app - it’s part of iOS so as long as you’ve got a later version of iOS it’ll work automatically.

Depending on the car, if you plug the phone in it’ll automatically open the Apple Car Play screen (likely configurable on the car head unit).

Android Auto you have to download an additional app. but I have heard some phone manufacturers put it on automatically now also as part of their ‘bloatware’.

Our Mustang had Apple Play in May, connected my IPhone SE via cable and apps just appeared, no download, we had Spotify, google maps, the lot, worked really well

In fairness to the OP, the new model Focus (coming to the UK in August) is coming with a built in modem - which will allow it to work as a wifi hotspot.

Focus's in the states will get 5 years free subscription on the modem, so it would be possible to find a rental car with wifi.
Sadly the UK version will only get 3 months free with the modem.
