The roadworks are through the downtown area - from Kirkman Road east/northwards - they are widening it to cope with more traffic. It is a project called I-4 Ultimate - it has its own web site, with details. When I've been through that section, the traffic moved as quickly as it did before the work started - they have all the lanes still open, but they occasionally close specific exits or the local roads that cross it. On some sections, traffic was exceeding the speed limit, despite the narrow lanes, temporary surface, etc, which is scary.
There are no roadworks from Universal west/southwards through the main visitor area - it is slow there because of the sheer volume of traffic and made much worse if there is an accident - nothing to do with roadworks. Unless you venture further east/north, you won't see roadworks. I-4 Ultimate has several more years before it is completed. They then have plans to widen the I-4 from Universal down past Championsgate, which will follow on from Ultimate in several stages working southwards. That WILL affect visitors for a decade or so, as you will then be driving through it! There are details on the I-4 Ultimate web site. You can get local traffic news on GoogleMaps, which shows traffic speeds, or on traffic maps on local news sites such as mynews13.com and there are traffic web cams too. UK roads such as the M25 and the M1 in the rush hour are much worse than the I-4. |
