Grand Canyon South Rim - What to do?

We're staying at the Bright Angel Lodge at Grand Canyon South Rim in October and we don't know what to do with our time. A mule ride is out as we only have one night, so not enough time. We like the idea of a walk or visiting any historic points of interest. Any suggestions?

Hi Tracy, we're going for 4 nights in January in the middle of our Las Vegas trip, so far I am thinking an airplane ride through the Canyon and a still riverraft ride?
