I think the real challenge for the OP will be finding decent hotels for adults and 3 kids, and at a reasonable budget.

Link to the beach Hummer Tours - we never did this and it's a bit further South than the main beachat Pismo, and even further sout of the part that people can take cars on, which is a fair walk to the South of the main Pismo beach.
The Sandcastle Inn was right on the beach at Pismo - but don't know if the rooms suit.

We stayed in the Seaventure Hotel which is literally right on the beach, but again not really designed for families, unless 2 x doubles are good enough.

Thanks Georgemac and Cloverlady. I'll hunt out your trip reports Georgemac.

You're right, it's definitely a challenge finding hotels for 5 people (4 adults really) without having to book 2 rooms. Staying in the Dolphin Bay at Pismo in one room, but the hotel in San Francisco has to be two rooms.

Thanks for the trip advice and links too, really helpful!

We have issues with 5 of us too. Managed to get a room for 5 at the Zephyr Hotel in San Francisco which looks good. Anaheim isn't a problem either so they are there, just a bit more effort required than Florida.

Not hard to find - there is a hyperlink in my signature - not much in way of family things to do, but some nice photos and good info on shops! Last year was our first ever holiday minus kids, although our kids are now 23/28, but our grandson is 4!

Edited to add, I have been looking a lot at AirBnb and VRBO for apartments in California - there are plenty, from affordable to really really expensive - still booking privately, and compared to doing it with one owner in Florida, would be multiple owners and security deposits in California - still for 5 it might be a good option.

We stayed at the Lighthouse Suites in Pismo. We had a lovely 2 bed apartment & there was a pool and free breakfast.

The hotel was lovely, but I'm not sure I'd stay in Pismo for a week.

Take a look at my trip report - it was one of the best holidays we've ever had!
