The first time(last year) we flew back Premium with TUI i had my handbag separate from hand luggage and the check in agent was insistent it went into my hand luggage - i couldn't get it in so it had to go in DH's.

The second time this year they never said a word.

I guess it depends on the check in agent you have.

Why not just take a small rucksack/back pack? Plenty of storage and lots of pockets for easy access. Easy to carry, and soft so fits in places easier than than these hard cases I see people take as hand luggage.

That's exactly what I take and it works fine.
