Coming back last time I had bought a last minute Yankee Candle and it was in my hand luggage. At Sanford airport after my hand luggage came through I was pulled aside with the case and asked what was the large item in it - my Yankee candle for Christmas use! Fine we needed to check, thought it was but needed to hear what it was. I offered to open the case to show them and they said no its fine. So obviously they are on the look out for candles, but mine was not taken away from me.

I had a Yankee Candle swabbed and tested at Boston airport last year, but it was returned to me after testing. It was in my hand luggage.

Is it not glass that ‘triggers’ their alarms. It shows as black on their xrays so has to be checked.

Didn't know that, so would that mean all those people putting perfume and aftershave in hold luggage will get pulled and checked

We had our laptop stolen at the security check in Sanford, and although we told the security people we couldn't claim as we didn't report it to the police!
The security people told us we had to catch out flight, so I can sympathise with your situation 😕

I think on 3 separate occasions when we have had a note in the cases to say they have been checked we have noticed things missing (we never buy candles! It's always items of clothing missing!) however I put it down to them probably doing mass checks at once and unfortunately sometimes things just getting mixed up rather than theft.

I have no idea how they do it, does 1 person take one case at a time for example and open each one themselves, check it and lock it, or is one person given 5 cases that someone else has opened earlier in the process, they line them up, quickly check each one then close them up... in this instance the might notice something has fallen out of one of the cases but not sure which one so they might put it in the one they think it's come from, or maybe they dispose of items when they don't know where they have come from? I don't know, I have no idea of their processes & procedures - I don't think someone in that kind of job would risk prison for a cap / t-shirt / candle etc plus I imagine they have CCTV covering the area the cases are checked.

Google 'TSA theft' and you'll be surprised.
