Help with our Southern States Road Trip
Still not booked flights but have 3 possible routes depending on which airport we fly in/out of.
With each route there will be 3 fairly long drives of 5-6 hours and speaking to my OH he has suggested we break each one with an overnighter which we don’t mind doing. So looking for suggestions of anywhere remotely interesting to stay between Hilton Head Island - Gatlinburg Atlanta - Destin Destin - Jacksonville or Orlando Have seen Congaree NP is kind of on the way to Smoky Mountain NP, is it worth a visit? |

Excited about Disney

A few years back we stayed at the 1872 John Denham B&B in Monticello which is about midway between Destin & Jacksonville. It was only about 5 miles off I-10E & was a lovely place for an overnight stay. There was also a really nice small restaurant in town called the Brick House Eatery which smoked its own prime rib. Both places appear to still be operational.
Monticello itself was an interesting place to explore & had a walking tour which went past many historic buildings - including the B&B! Hope this helps. |

Just an alternative suggestion : we’ve done a lot of long drives in the US & one option we sometimes take (when it fits the schedule etc) is to stop halfway for lunch & a movie! (Somewhere close to the Interstate)
That way we don’t feel that all we’ve done that day is drive. |

The B&B looks wonderful, thanks so much. Will read up some more on Monticello, I love small quaint towns in Florida

I suggested just this (well not the movies, that's a great idea!) but OH really wasn't keen. I said that if we did two stints of 3 hours, with both of us driving it wouldn't be too bad. After this summers road trip with 8 stops I was trying to lessen the amount we have next year and maximise our time in each place. We'll see though

We tend to have a max of 5 hours split into 2 or 3 blocks. Have a room snack breakfast and a reasonable start, then breakfast /brunch and a day out and on to the next stop. No different to driving somewhere for a day out.

I think if we broke the driving into chunks it would be more than doable! I don't want to have unnecessary stops if I can help it but need to keep him indoors happy too

Southern Interstates tend to endless grey ribbons of tree lined corridors.
What works best for us, is to pick secondary destinations of interest along the route to major destinations. Even if this involves a detour, which takes us a fair way from an Interstate. All stops other than that, are simply for fuel, something to eat and drink, or maybe a little nap. If I tried to break the journey up with a film, that wouldn't work because I would inevitably fall asleep. Another concern would be having our car broken into outside the cinema. Small towns in Southern States can be a bit 'Deliverance'. Parking up a brand new rental SUV or whatever filled with all our luggage could be risky. I would settle on the main points of interest, then see if anything appeals within striking distance along the way. If not, apart from little breaks I would just keep going. |
