They are unlikely to be willing to book you onto anything which is not part of their partner code share program if outside of 14 days.

However, they don't know whether you could go earlier, so may well be able to book you onto an earlier flight if they have one available.

I could be wrong ( I usually am) but my reading off the CAA website says the 7/14 day rule applies to compensation, not the provision of an alternative flight with a different airline.

Prior to 14 days they can just cancel and refund without offering anything. Obviously not their preferred answer but if you tried to insist they put you on a non code share flight it would be the answer.
