Random question, do you have a padlock on your tank? The guys told us to do that asap as oil theft is a thing.
So pleased for you, your mood really lifts when you have warmth again doesn't it! Dh was going to sort out the empty cupboard where the old boiler was but he had man flu over the weekend Other than that the only difference is that we have some pipes running along one wall of the conservatory but we have work to do on the house anyway.

Our tank has 2 caps, 1 has a lock but he opened the other no problem to put the pipe in I asked how secure it is and because it is a single skin plastic tank if it was a victim the scum would just punch a hole in it apparently Aside from the weight of it, my only worry about the boiler being outside was whether it could be stolen, which it could if someone was determined to do it! When we redo the fences we are putting a fence around it with a padlocked gate. I think it is more about making it more difficult and time consuming to steal, if they are really determined then they will take it whatever you do!

We're shelving the newly empty cupboard tomorrow, very excited as we dont have much storage space in this house.

I never thought of the boiler being stolen, but we're putting a bolt and padlock on the gate and a camera at the back too. Hoping that will be enough of a deterrent. There are a fair few tanks around here too, been peeking when walking the dogs.

I managed to fill a few of the holes today and quite pleased with how it turned out. We're almost redoing the whole house, but this suddenly became the priority when we moved in and had no heating.

Snap! We had hoped it would last a bit longer as where the boiler was will be part of a remodel so we had to quickly make a decision that wouldn't impact on that. However with the chimney flue being non-compliant now the decision was pretty much made for us!

Good luck, let me know how you get on

Wall boiler are larger on the inside than the hole in the wall. In order to steal one you would either have to knock a big hole in the wall or break on for access to the inside.

Tanks can be vulnerable though, so definitely worth thinking about protecting that. You can get specialist alarms for them.

On the oil front - turns out our tank was bone dry despite the gauge showing it was a third full. Luckily a local company were able to deliver the next day. They are also going to fit a new sight gauge for me as it is clouded up. We now wonder if it was running out of oil that broke the boiler or whether the boiler was even broken? Either way we needed a new boiler anyway so now it is done. Interestingly the chap who came out to try and fix it checked the oil level and he said our oil was ok!

Very silly question but did they check the tank to make sure there aren't any leaks/ slow trickles?

It is an external boiler, big green box sitting next to the house so could be vulnerable. However it is heavy but still all you would need is a pair of cutters and a trolley and you’d be away. I didn’t even realise you could get outside boilers, apparently it is only oil though not gas. I guess you could count air source heat pumps as outside ‘boilers’😉 as well!

Our boiler is external, we installed it in 2008 replacing the unsightly one that was taking up too much room in the kitchen. It has been great.

Then it should be secured down with security bolts.

Heat pumps are heat exchangers rather than boilers, but equally as valuable.

Thanks for that, when the engineer comes to empty the cleaner I will ask him if it is bolted down.
