Chinese VISA - getting confused

So we need a Chinese Visa for our trip later in the year.

We don't qualify for the 144 hour transit VISA as are there for 2 weeks.

I have read conflicting information online as to whether you have to go to the embassy to get a Visa of whether it's possible to get it online? I have seen references to a company China Visa Direct which people have used to get 'group' VISA's?

It would cost us £100 on the train to go to our nearest embassy (London) and probably a day annual leave (two if we also need to go and pick it up in person + another £100?), so keen to avoid this if possible.

Have you travelled to China on a VISA?

There are companies that do it online but we found it costs extra for those ones, I’m not sure if you then still have to visit the embassy, we didn’t look after seeing the price as we knew the train journey plus fees would be less.. Cost of the visa for us was £170 each (plus postage if you didn’t bring your own envelope to return your passport in as we didn’t want to go back). We done it ourselves on the official visa website and then went to the embassy in London. We followed the instructions on the Wendy Wu page on how to fill it in. Just be careful if you do it yourself in what you need to bring to the embassy. We were ok, but saw plenty of people having to use the printer or copy machine there!

As I understand it you do need to attend in person to do finger prints. My work used this company when I had to get a visa for China cibtvisas/china-visa

I’ve also travelled for work and my company uses this company for all visas.

Forgot about the fingerprints! We did see that website but they charge on top of the application itself, so worked out to be about double the price. We knew we could do it ourselves with no issues.

Basically everything you fill in on the form is exactly the same as the Chinese visa website but they just double check your information before it’s submitted to make sure it’s not rejected. For us that wasn’t worth the £100+ each.
