Car hire credit card hold - any idea how much?

Hi

We are renting a car via Avis (BA flydrive) - just wondering if anyone knows what the hold is they put on the credit card? So we know how much is left on the card for emergency spends.

thanks all

Each car company (aand some each location) place a different hold on the card. I recently rented with Alamo and their policy is to hold the amount of the rental only so in my case it was around $100. I also had an Enterprise car a few weeks ago and the location I rented from wanted $300.00 plus the cost of the rental so for this car, closer to $400.00.

You can call and ask Avis but they might send you to the local company.

We have used different rental companies over the years and always make sure we allocate $250 to be available on CC. But no more than $100 has ever been stopped.

I have been using Alamo (pre-pay) pretty much exclusively for the past decade and more and have never had any hold.

Remember, they may charge the card after you have returned home if they receive toll fees, or a moving violation fine ( red light or non stop at stop sign for example). The latter was $158 plus $15 admin when my son got a red light fine three years ago.
No the any of these things will happen, but best to be aware.

Alamo we had nothing, Avis took a $100 which appeared back on the card 10 days later ( we were there 3 weeks so 10 days into the holiday)
