We were in Miami in December and did skip the queue so you go straight to choose a car then the exit and not asked and again in May we went in via Orlando and not asked for a copy.

My guess is that the desk clerks don't actually have any mechanism for making you pay more, even if they did think you were 'playing the system'. Their Alamo branch will have received a payment from Alamo UK for your rental and the only way they can make more money from you is by selling you their gas and the various extras and upgrades. They can't somehow fine you for not bringing the guide (if they've even heard of it).
There's no way they're going to waste time and effort checking you've brought the book with you when there's no benefit to them. I've used Alamo Brits 3 or 4 times and like others have never been asked for it.

Hey up Rowlf Same here, never asked... I book my brothers hires (double Amex miles), never told him about this book. I'm with you and MrT, doubt Alamo counter staff are aware, or care, about the book. Guide is relative to the Orlando area, bro's pick ups are Fort Myers airport, FM staff likely unaware and indifferent - you can book a plethora of US airports via Alamo Brits; take LA or San Francisco for example, likely have zero knowledge of the book.
My personal view; the pop up is designed to encourage one into purchasing this guide, which, understandably, benefits the author - wasn't/isn't it written by a Brit or two? No doubt some find it helpful, but then again thousands of Dibbers freely give the same guidance. |

Thanks All. I have reassured the hubby that it really isn't needed. We intend to do Skip the counter as well.
This is why I love the Dibb.

Another Dibber who has never been asked (used 3 times now).
If you really wanted peace of mind it is actually a great book, although must confess I haven't read one for years - well since finding the Dibb anyway!

If you have a Kindle you can download a sample of the Brits book for free on Amazon if you're wary. You could then go to the cover & show them that- looks exactly like the whole book. Never been asked for it myself, but downloaded the sample years ago, just in case.

I've been several times.
For my holiday last January I had a brain-trump and booked through the US Alamo site. I only realised when I got there my stupid mistake whn they wanted my to stump up $600 for insurance. He was absolutely right, it was my mistake. I had not pre-paid and said, if I walk away now, book again through Alamo Brits will that be ok? He said all he needed was a booking reference number. I asked him if he needed the book and he said 'what book?' I spent five minutes on my phone and saved myself $700, the actual hire was cheaper and there were no penalties for being a no show on my original booking. Long story short you don't need the book. I've got a few old editions, maybe we should share it around free to the 'worriers' |

if anybody hadve been asked for the book, we (dibb regulars) would know about it by now. i've been using it since after the dragster code ended (so 5 or 6 times i think) and never been asked.
if they did, i'd say i'd left my copy at home (which is true. i have a copy from 2008 knocking around somewhere) if you're really paranoid (which you shouldn't be) buy a second hand copy, or even a new copy of an older version of the book... you can get the 2014 book (Still mostly relevant) for £2.26 delivered amazon/Brit-Guide-...cdb6acd87cc265 or 2011 for £1.89! |

Cheers All
Another quick question, if I choose the pay later option can I pay this off at any time and then do skip the counter or can i only pay once I arrive?
