My consultant said they last 10/15 years although he does know of some that have lasted over 20 years. He also told me that he can replace each replacement once. I waited and in retrospect I would have preferred to have been mobile and had less pain over the past 10 years even with the possibility of having to have the op again. I know it has to be a balanced decision but i've missed out on doing so much over the past few years, hopefully i'll now have the chance to make up for lost time

Thanks for all the information guys.

I have been told that the second one isn't as successful as the first one.

I'm 50 and had a Total Knee Replacement (Left Knee) on Thanksgiving day

Burst the knee weightlifting 25 years ago and had four repairs - last one in 2009.

By 2011 that was breaking down and 2012 and 2013 disappeared in a fog of painkillers and reduced mobility

Tried a Hyaluronic injection last August - it didn't work. Surgeon offered steroids but I wasn't interested as it wasn't fixing anything in the long term

Told him I would prefer a quick replacement - he agreed and warned me I could expect pain for 6 mths and up to a year to walk properly.

I am now 20 weeks after surgery and have had no pain at all for 11 weeks and the walking improves every week

My weight has dropped as I no longer eat painkillers and avoid walking

It was the single best health decision I ever made and while I expect I may need to have it redone in 15 years, I'm not too worried as I will have my life back in the meantime

Great to hear people's stories on this subject. Freaks me out a little bit. As I'm only 41,suffered many years with both knees. My specialist doesn't like me telling him I'm not having any kind of look about inside. My dad has suffered since the same age. He has had the injections etc,but never lasted long pain free. He had worse pain after the look about stuff. Think I'll just wait as long as possible till I can't cope. Interesting to read everyone's experiences.

I think you have to remember everyone is different, its lovely to hear everyone's comments about how much better life is after a knee replacement but my mum is looking at needing one on her
other knee but would rather put up with the pain than go through the ordeal she went through last time. Sorry not what you want to hear.

I had a knee replacement done last December aged 52. No crutches but a walking stick for a couple of weeks afterwards. Found going down stairs still a bit tricky at first but got there in the end ! I work as a Nursery Teacher so am on my feet for 12 hour shifts and was back at work after 8 weeks ! Got to say this wasn't through choice but was more or less told come back or leave In hindsight a phased return would have been good but couldn't get this agreed to unfortunately. Also got no physio due to a mess up but my DH is a personal trainer who works with people with disabilities or who have had strokes etc and he devised me a programme to help. Anyway fast forward to now and I am back at the gym several times a week and really enjoying my swimming, I found cycling difficult at first but I'm fine now.

Can I just ask the person who mentioned Manta as it's one of my favourite rides... how did you find out that the knee had to be able to go beyond 90 Degrees ? Not sure what my knee does these days, it was doing 90 when I went for my check up at the hospital 6 months ago but not sure about now.

I am 42 and had one on november 1st last year. At almost 6 months i am still not recovered. My surgeon said it is because of all the previos operations on my knee and scar tissue. I am still in pain and badly swollen. I have been advised to sit tight until a year out. Then if the pain/swelling lingers somethings wrong. I am not trying to damper it but there are some of us who dont get amazing results. I had a rom of 85 for months and just made it to 100 last week. Bonesmart is a great site for info. I wish i had found it beforehand.

My second TKR is planned for 2 weeks time. I'm desperate to get flights booked for Florida - how soon has anyone travelled long-haul after having this procedure. I'm thinking about Halloween
