My daughter just started school in Sept and her school uses the Read Write Inc method, the school across the road uses Jolly Phonics. Best to ask her teacher what method they use as they're both different.
They grasp it quite easily once they've learnt what sound each letter makes 🙂

Coming to this with my teaching head on - I teach A LOT of phonics. Before watching any videos/songs with her find out what phonics scheme they use at school, otherwise she might get confused, because different schemes teach in different orders etc.

In the mean time, some terminology/activities to get you going.

Phonics - The sounds the letters make, it's as simple as that.
Digraph - Two letters, one sound so S+H together make a 'Shh' sound.
Blending - Reading all the sounds together to make a word
Segmenting - Taking the word and identifying the sounds in the word

To start with maybe have some flashcards, you can homemake them, get her used to saying the sounds of the letters she knows - so most likely 'S A T P I N' which are the first letters they usually teach.
Ask her to find the cards which make the word 'Cat', Sat', etc.
Make words using the cards and ask her to blend the sounds to make the words.

I can offer more help once you know a scheme but feel to pm me if you have any specific questions.
Most of it is just fancy words for simple concepts though, promise xx

I’ve got three children and my older two learnt phonics with no problem. Once they started learning the sounds they progressed really quickly. DS (5) started school in September and is really struggling learning the sounds and I don’t know how to help him as my others just “got” it. Even with pictures to help he doesn’t understand how to listen for the sound at the beginning of the word. It’s very frustrating. Can anybody offer any advice?

Discuss with school. It may be they can offer him additional support but at the same time they may consider he’s still learning and will ‘catch up’ in his own time under regular tuition he already has. Definitely monitor the situation but open a dialogue with school about it first.

The more obvious issues could be sight or audio related. Does he need a hearing test and opticians check up?
