Hotel closed on travel dates

Hi all

Wondering if any of you knowledgable dibbers can help me with something!

My parents have booked to go to Lanzarote over Christmas and new year (they booked last week) and have now discovered that their hotel is currently closed, due to reopen 20th December (they’re supposed to arrive 24th). There’s no guarantee of this though as it’s based on booking numbers.

If the hotel doesn’t open, can they request a refund from jet 2 (it’s a package holiday)?

If not, the original hotel is adult’s only but the hotel jet 2 have apparently been moving people to while it’s closed isn’t adult’s only. Can they say this isn’t what they paid for and they don’t want to be moved there? They also paid for an upgraded room/area of the original hotel so they’re really not happy about moving to a hotel that isn’t adults only and doesn’t have as good rooms (despite being the same class of hotel).

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

Update:

I have just found something on Which that says if the provider makes a significant change to your accommodation, they have to give you the choice of accepting the change (with a reduced price if new hotel cheaper) or offer a refund with no cancellation fee.

Hope this helps anyone else who may be in the same position.
