I'm definitely on the side on of not driving if the weather is bad. If it's really bad I'm digging the roads out anyway - and I don't stop to dig out anyone that gets stuck in their shiny 4x4 when they've come to 'look at the snow' - crack on and look. Harsh, but my job is to clear the roads of snow, not idiots. I don't know anybody that changes they're tyres with the seasons - where we live the weather isn't bad enough often enough to bother.
I never need to drive across snowy lakes anyway, and if for some crazy reason i had to, I certainly wouldn't be doing it at 60mph . |

I run two sets of wheels, summer and winter on both of our cars now (I've always had 2 sets for BMW's) and we bought SWMBO'S mini from a German/Danish couple who threw in a set of winter's so run them on that too.
The difference with them is astounding, and not just in the snow, they provide a real benefit in wet weather and with temperatures below about 7/8°c Last year in the snow I was able to pass roads in my RWD 535d that many awd/4x4s had become stuck on when most of those I work with who have BMW'S just gave up and got the train I've been lucky to source decent second hand sets of wheels for good prices. The set for my X5 were only £100 more than a new rear Tyre and you get twice as much use from your tyres because you use alternate sets between oct-apr and apr-oct Excuse the mess but that's my current Tyre store with a set of 5 series wheels I need to sell! |

Ok in snow at 30 mph a car with summer tyres will take 43m to stop with winter tyres 35m. 8 meters is a lot so next time we do have snow and you have to go out leave 10 meters to the car in front they might have winter tyres on.

Good advice, but when it snows I just pull the duvet a bit tighter - one of the benefits of being retired. Wake me up in the spring!
