Thanks again all - better apply for that provisional then. I didnt get my own license until I was 27 because a) I was skint so prioritised food and b) I lived in the middle of a large city until then with excellent public transport so never had the need.

My eldest took weekly lessons starting on her 17th birthday had about 40 hrs and passed her test
My youngest did a weeks intensive course 3 days after his birthday which also included his theory test , so he was driving much quicker than my daughter . I also took my first lesson on my 17th birthday . |

Just be glad you don’t live in South Carolina. One of my granddaughters turned fifteen in July and already has her learners permit and is having lessons. Her sister who turned seventeen in January has been driving for two years. I’ve been a passenger in her car and I have to say she is a good driver didn’t feel the least bit nervous.

As building sites are private property I was driving anything and everything from 15 years of age.
Some of us on here will remember these licences that were 10/6d!

If your son is 17 in October you really need to apply for his provisional licence now (you can do this 3 months before he’s 17) The licences are taking weeks more than normal at the moment to arrive and he can’t learn to drive if he hasn’t got the provisional licence.
Also, like smilesonfaces said he can’t take a driving test until he’s passed his theory test. And he can only start physically learning to drive on his 17th birthday. But once passed can drive on his own straight away. My 17 Dd passed her driving test yesterday after having her test cancelled back in mid March. We are over the moon! Kat

My son and daughter both had their first lesson on their 17th birthdays and both passed 3 months later. We stay in the country so we’re keen to get them driving as quickly as possible😁
