Highway 1 closure
I see part of highway 1 has been washed away this weekend. Wonder how long it will take to reopen this time.

Yes, bit further north than the last one. Rat Creek this time which is just south of Big Sur.
Both directions washed away, so another big job to fix. Some talk of a temporary route being created but just speculation at this stage. Probably looking at months rather than weeks 🥺 |

I missed out due to the mudslide in 2018 and had to go inland, missing everything between Monterey and San Simeon. (We came in South of SS and headed back up North).
Hoping they sort this one quicker.. and by Aug 18.

I have been looking on a map. It is 48 miles south of Monterey.
If that is the case, I can head south from Monterey and get Big Sur, Partington Ridge, Pfeiffer burns and Bixby bridge before going N again to get out, go inland and then head South as we did last time. It is still pretty scenic, but in a different way. If we do this, we will delete our night in San Simeon and our visit to Hearst Castle. We will head straight in to San Luis Obispo after rejoining the Route 1 as soon as we can, having a night in the Madonna Inn (and a huge gateau) before taking up our 2 following nights at Pismo Beach. It’s going to cost us an extra 90 miles of driving. It won’t be the end of the world and I don’t need to do anything just yet. Edited at 01:46 AM. |

We had to drive the 101 after the may 2017 mudslide left it closed til 2018. We managed to do Solvang and further south. We are heading that way again but I'm glad now that I didn't book the coast but inland.
