We've done it twice in Massachusetts (Cape Cod) and in New Hampshire. The boys were in Primary school and they were fab family holidays. Tons to do in the local areas, but many days were spent in the vicinity of the cabin, lake swimming, canoeing etc. July weather was great. We visited a county fair, lots of outlet shops, folk museums. Cape Cod especially had plenty of attractions and we visited Boston by park and ride.

In Cape Cod we stayed in Mashpee.
In New Hampshire we were near Madison and North Conway in Eidelweiss Village, by Middle Pea Porridge Pond We booked both with a company called Four Seasons in New England who really knew their properties well, but the lovely couple who ran it have now retired. Homeaway will have similar properties. I'll try and look and see what would be an equivalent. Being lakeside was important to us. We had many a game of Baywatch as I had a red cossie. I was "rescued" by my boys regularly.

Thank you, it sounds lovely. We have visited Bar Harbor and really loved it there too.

We did cape cod in 2019 but lake cabins didn't come up on my google search at all despite us being a party of 5; / Strange
It's definitely and area I want to visit again as we only had 4 days there while visiting family in Boston.
