san Francisco to Yosemite -no driving ?

Hello Dibbers
Willing away a few hours planning a west Coast trip . likely destinations San Francisco, Yosemite and Los Angeles.
Now, bot me and my partner are not keen on the idea of driving , although we both can ! Ive had an unfortunate experience driving in France in an automatic so am scarred for life ...even though I love driving in the UK
I've really set my heart on staying at Evergreen Lodge outside of the National Park but I think thats going to be tricky without a car. My OH says we could do Amtrak from San Francisco the YART bus to Yosemite. I see this does not go near Evergreen but does, at certain times of year seem to stop at Rush Creek Lodge the sister property to Evergreen. We are now looking to go late September 2022 to fit in with NFL.
Has anyone here done the "no driving " option here ?
I am quite happy for people to provide me with reassurance & say stop being such a weed and drive if too difficult !
Thanks !

any advice welcome

Would your partner not drive . It’s so difficult if you don’t and so much easier with the extra freedom it gives

You can get there with public transport taking a couple of hours more than driving.

BART train to Richmond
Amtrak to Merced
YART to the valley

It will cost more than driving though.

You say you had a bad experience in France, but please don't let that put you off.

California with a car is much easier and allows you to do so much more.

We did a day trip with a minibus company from SF to Yosemite, a long day but saw most things, including the giant redwoods.

I am a reasonably nervous driver in Florida (I don’t like the I4 a lot) but I really, really enjoyed the drive around California around the areas where there are no freeways - this would be one of them

well, he's reluctant too and I kinda think we should share it...I think you are right , if we could make the decision to go for it it would open up our options ...we are also planning to go to LA as Want to do Disneyland (before I get too old ! ) this would also offer us the opportunity to do Monterey,Carmel Pismo beach etc...en route if we were driving but we will only have 14 days. I need to check out the route from yosemite as we would be starting san Francisco 4-5 nights-Yosemite 2-3 nights then not sure but ending in LA...
thanks

thanks for the journey info !
I am liking the reassurance about driving ! I know it will limit us if we don't ... & am now trying to persuade him & me

we did look at the day trip, it looks good if you have limited time this morning I am leaning on wanting to stay overnight and really make the most of it as I am getting to the age where I cannot guarantee we will make it back for another trip !( I am 50 this year)

this is just the reassurance I need ! I am not great at driving automatics either which is another worry... Sounds like I need more practice...I know...I am definitely feeling braver this morning...ish :d

If you partner is more confident, get them to drive out of the city and them take over and build your confidence where the roads are quieter.

What don't you get on with in an automatic?
