We hired a car and drove out to the South Rim and did it in just one day, stopped off at the Hoover Dam on the way and went via Route 66. I much preferred the Valley of Fire to be honest, but Grand Canyon is one of those bucket list things so was pleased to have done it, didn't feel the need to stay over.

Sadly, it doesn't. The train left the hotel at about 9.30 a.m. for a 2.5 hr journey there, we had just under 4 hours at the Canyon to explore, then the train departed back to the hotel around 4.00 p.m. I think to get the dawn or dusk experience, you would probably need to stay in a hotel located at the Canyon. These do exist, but get booked up very quickly waaaaay in advance, so you would need to be quick.

There is also the town of Tusayan at the park entrance which has some of the hotel chains and eateries. Is only 15 minutes from there to the south rim.
You can often find accommodation here even a week before in peak season. |

We stayed in Tusayan it was pretty cheap and freezing cold but we loved it , to see snow on the Grand Canyon made it even more magical, it was December though !We heard Coyotes near our room and had an amazing meal at the Best western hotel in Tusayan which had a huge Christmas tree outside and you could smell woodsmoke all around it was wonderful

I prefer the North Rim as it is much less commercial. I also think it is a shorter drive from Las Vegas. You really need to spend a night (or more) in the park.
Before I went I was told it was like standing in a post card. It really was and I encourage everyone to see it. |
