Tell us about Madeira Please

Hi
We are in need of a break and are looking at booking a trip to Madeira as it seems it is ok to travel to at the moment. We have never been there before so hoping you can help us.

We know it is very hilly so we may have some difficulties getting around as we both use mobility scooters. But given those constraints can any of you recommend any restaurants, supermarkets, places to visit or things to do please.

We will be staying in a villa and will have a car.

Thank You

Maderia is a lovely place..we always feel safe when there.
Lots of different places to visit on tours.
Or just staying in Funchal is good...plenty of good restaurants and nice bars.
It has a lot of old world charm about it... and we found the people to be very friendly.

Driving in Madeira is not always easy. The main highways are excellent but the small roads off those can be more difficult.

Funchal is a beautiful well kept city with plentry of excellent restaurants and street cafes. The airport is new and well managed. Car hire at the airport is easy.

The main promenade is user friendly and wide and much of Funchal is pedestrianised. It has some good markets for food shopping.

I'm sure you will enjoy it.

I would also factor in the weather as diverts can be quite common in winter due to the winds at the airport. Pilots have to have specific training to land at Funchal.

We love Madeira, the climate is great. Depending on the months you go , you will find some areas quite windy . Funchal is more sheltered I find. Beautiful prom to walk along, loads of little restaurants in a pedestrian area and really cheap to eat in. In the square around the Church, loads of entertainment by groups, bands etc. Lovely place to sit, have a drink and just chill. In Funchal we stay at the Cliff Bay, but be prepared for Quite steep roads.

Last December we stayed In Canico Baxio, just about 15 mins from airport and it’s quite isolated, but was an all inclusive. Loved it so much we booked again for July , but we all know what happened then.
We like to walk a lot, but apart from the steep roads not much more. Even in December we had temperatures in the mid 20’s and odd mins of rain, but always a nice wind.
As others say, it’s a difficult airport to land in , and may take more than one attempt but don’t let that put you off. Lovely airport inside and means on departure I can bring my Birds Of Paradise flowers back

Hi, we are in Madeira now, just waiting for the bus to pick us up on the way home. As others have said very beautiful but hilly. Loads of good restaurants and bars. You will need to fill in a form before or on arrival. Must be done electronically, no paper, so do before you get here. You then have a covid test and have to isolate in your hotel, villa until you receive the results. Ours took about 7 hours. Any questions just ask.

Hi Everyone thanks so much for the feedback this is really helpful. Unfortunately we have had to put our plans on hold while DH has some more blood tests, scans etc. But I do hope to get to Madeira at some point we sadly can't get the all clear to travel from the docs till these are done.
